First sewing project

Okay, maybe not my first sewing project ever, but it is my first sewing project since junior high and high school.  That is over ten years ago.  This new venture started because my wonderful mom bought me a sewing machine for Christmas.  I couldn't believe it.  I was so excited as I opened up my gift.  Staring at me was this classic, green, vintage looking machine.

I couldn't wait to get out and buy material to start sewing.  Last Sunday, I convinced Jeff so go with me to JoAnn's Fabric store.  I know right!? What was I thinking asking a guy to go to a fabric store, but surprisingly he agreed.  I think he was wanting to come to encourage me.  We browsed through the sewing patterns, rows of material, scissors, thread and everything else.  To be honest with you, I was overwhelmed.  I picked out a pattern for a little girls dress I wanted to make for a friends baby.  I had the impression I would be able to sew this for my first project.  Jeff graciously said to me, "You know it might not turn out perfect, so maybe you can pick out something that would be easier and not a gift for someone."  I agreed and we continued looking for the perfect first project.

I finally stumbled upon an area that had "cut, sew, & go" panel projects.  I found this cute little tote to sew.  I picked out the pattern I liked, which so happened to be a vintage pattern.  I swear I didn't know until I got in the car and looked at the name of it :)  I had my bag of sewing goodies and I was happy.  Ready, set, go.....

Yah right! This pattern had five steps.  Supposedly simple, since the directions said that it could be completed in an 1 hr.  Could it really be hard?  Yes! Each step was written in sewing jargon that I could not understand.  After about 2 hrs of trying to understand, I had to take a break.

Let me tell you, I have an amazing husband.  I told him about my frustrations and he came to my rescue.  He helped me.  Can you believe it? A man figured out the sewing language.  I was ready to start up again.  It may have taken me more than an hour.  In fact I spread out the steps over a couple of days, but I finished it.  I am so proud of myself.  I believe that the next project I choose to embark upon will be a little more easier.  One project at a time, but everyone has to start somewhere...here is mine.
